The culinary in the salt pans

The European Cultural Heritage Days are dedicated this year to gastronomy entitled "Gastronomic Heritage for All".

For the second time in succession, the Maritime Museum “Sergej Mašera” Piran carries out the project Cookery in the Saltpans in cooperation with the Self-governing Community of Italian Nationals Piran, the Community of Italians »Giuseppe Tartini” Piran, the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Slovenia, the Sečovlje Parish, the Sečovlje Salina Nature Park Management and the Regional Archives Koper.

Through the presentation of typical saltpans dishes, we wish to contribute to the knowledge, evaluation, protection and preservation of the still alive, although increasingly endangered and disappearing saltpans heritage.

This year’s first event within the framework of the Cookery in the Saltpans project was dedicated to bread. From the bread oven of the Museum of Salt-making, the pleasant smell of freshly baked bread prepared by Ana Dessardo and Suzana Kogovšek Liturri could be detected once more.

We also organized a workshop for children. From the real bread dough they shaped small loaves and marked them with bread stamps, the same as this was done in the pans in former times.

More information on bread baking and bread stamps can be found here.
