The Piran Lighthouse

The Piran Lighthouse

The distinctive image of the Cape of Piran Cape is marked by the former defensive fortress (bastion) with a lighthouse and the lighthouse keeper's residence, the Church of Our Lady of Health and the spherical neo-Gothic belfry, which jointly form an inseparably linked whole.

The external stone staircase leads from the street to the top of the former fortification (rondelle) from 1508, which is part of the surviving Piran walls. Once, several cannons were positioned along its semicircular perimeter, while at present the terrace provides unforgettable views of the sea and sunsets. The lighthouse and the small stone facility were constructed on the platform of the former fortification in 1872, while two years later a residence for the lighthouse keeper was erected. In the 1920s, a well with a rainwater cistern for was built along it. The interior of the former lighthouse keeper's residence, in which several layers of past decorative paintings have survived under the white liquid mixtures, has not been restored as yet. Nevertheless, an interdisciplinary museum exhibition has been set up in it that provides an insight into the history of this Piran district from prehistoric times on, as well as tells the story of the development and significance of the port and lighthouse services and the lighthouse keeper’s work and lifestyle from the time the lighthouse was erected on this site until the end of the 1970s, when the lighthouse was automated. Part of the exhibition is also dedicated to restoration and conservation works on the monument.

A tour of the lighthouse also enables the visitors to enter the interior of the belfry and to climb up the spiral stairs to the very top with the belfry, where you will be rewarded with a view of the Piran rooftops and its surrounding area.
