WORKSHOPS

 

The Maritime Museum organizes various workshops for children and adults. The workshops embrace the spheres dealing with maritime enterprise and other spheres covered by our museum.

Maritime Museum – parent building – Gabrielli Palace:

 


Work with material sources (suitable for 7th to 9th year primary school children and secondary schools; duration 120 minutes or less)


At workshops, we shall be ascertaining what kind of sources we know and collect, how we take care of them and how we interpret them in the Museum. We shall get to know how interesting stories are told to us by different artefacts kept by the museum. Every participant should bring with him or her a family/personal article and analyse it as a true museal item.

 

 

Mosaic making (suitable for all; duration 120 minutes or less)


After viewing the archaeological collection with emphasis on mosaic pavings along the Slovenian coast, we shall get to know where the mosaics were used, what kind of motifs we chosen and how they were made. Every participant will select his or her own motif and create his or her own mosaic.

 


Flag alphabet and Morse code (suitable for primary schools; duration 60 minutes)


We shall get to know the flags used by seafarers instead of letters/words at sea and Morse code. The participants will attempt to unravel a written text and write down a short text with the newly learned characters. This is a suitable combination with the knot making workshop.

 


Knot making (suitable for primary schools; duration 60 minutes or less)


We shall learn how to tie several sailors knots. This is a suitable combination with the alphabet workshop.

 

 

 

 

 

Monfort:


Making of models of a topo and batana ship from paper (suitable for primary school pupils from 4th year onwards; duration 120 minutes or less)


We shall have a look at the traditional shipbuilding collection and get to know, while viewing the footage about making a replica of the Istrian topo, which took place in the museum, the manner of traditional vessel building. The participants shall make a model of the topo or batana ship from paper.

 


Making a small boat from paper and its colouring (suitable for pre-school children and 1st year primary school pupils; duration 60 minutes)


We shall have a look at the traditional shipbuilding collection and get to know, while having a look at the footage and photographs about making a replica of the Istrian topo, which took place in the museum, the manner of traditional vessel building. The participants shall make a little boat from paper and colour it if desired.

 


Colouring the rose of winds (suitable for all; duration 90 minutes)


We shall have a look at the exhibition Sal Nostrum, where we will learn, via various artefacts, photographs and testimonies by former salt-makers, how salt was harvested in the old days as well as where and how it was stored in former warehouses. We shall also be acquainted with how salt-workers were aided in predicting the weather and what kinds of accessories were used for this purpose. The participants shall make their own roses of winds.

 

 

 

 

 

Tona's House:


Soap making (suitable for all; duration 90 minutes)


In the ethnological collection at Sv. Peter we shall learn how people lived in this area in the old days and what they were occupied with. We shall get to know that even the hygiene habits used to be somewhat different than nowadays. Each participant shall make a soap from soap base.
