Inv. No. 4052 Lead anchor stock baring several stamps

Lead anchor stock bearing several stamps was brought to the museum in Piran by Miroslav Pahor, historian and first director soon after the museum has been founded.


A sample of wood taken from the opening in the stock was dated, using the radiocarbon technique, to the period between 380 and 180 BC with a probability of 95,4% accuracy.
The earliest stock of this type have so far been documented on shipwrecks dated to the mid 2nd century BC and remained in use at least to the 2nd .
The anchor’s stock in the Maritime Museum of Piran weighs 75.9 kg
