Childhood in the Salt-Pans – Salt Pans Cuisine 2024
On Wednesday the 24th of July 2024 the third event of this year's edition of the culinary heritage project “The Salt Pans Cuisine” took place at the Museum of Salt-making in Fontanigge at the Sečovlje Salina Nature Park.
In the year 2024, the European Heritage Days are dedicated to the heritage of cultural routes, networks and connections. The fifth edition of the Salt Pans Cuisine project is focused on the study, presentation and preparation of dishes related to the culture of living and working in the salt pans.
The event started with the opening greetings from the organisers Ajda Purger of the Maritime Museum "Sergej Mašera" Piran, Andrea Bartole of the Self-Governing Community of Italian Nationality Piran and Matjaž Kljun of the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Slovenia.The participants then visited the museum’s collection, engaged in the creative corner and enjoyed the demonstration of traditional games by the ethnographic group “La Famea dei salineri”. On this occasion the children were very taken by the slings and small boats made of giant cane leaves while the adults were intrigued by the game of hoop rolling.
Following was the talk with Norma Zudich, Anita Dessardo, Bruno Bonin and Fulvia Zudich on their memories of spending childhood in the saltpans led by Matjaž Kljun of the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Slovenia. The participants belonging to different generations talked about their duties and their free time spent fishing, playing and swimming in the saltpan’s canals.
Later Mrs. Anita Dessardo demonstrated the preparation of the traditional "kroštoli" dessert that was highly appreciated among the visitors. The evening was concluded in good company, gathered over good food and drink in the picturesque background of the Sečovlje saltpans.
The next event of the Salt Pans Cuisine will be on the 25th of August 2024 at Seča in the courtyard by the church of St. Jernej – kindly invited!
