Fishing at the Slovenian Istria Coast

The fishing collection shows a fresh image and new contents

On February 20th 2024, the renovated museum collection on fishing in northwestern Istria, with an emphasis on Piran and its inhabitants, was opened to the public.

Among the newly added artefacts exhibited along the museum’s staircase are examples of Piran fishermen’s items, ship models, documents and photographs, while the previously already exhibited items have been carefully cleaned. Of great interest are the newly digitized graphics on fishing and fish preservation in Europe from the 1797 Methodical Encyclopaedia, part of the museum’s »Biblioteca Civica« book collection. Three Piran fishermen (Sergio Perentin, Giuseppe Bertok and Boris Vovk) are presented with artefacts and images, and a special emphasis is given to female workers in the fish processing industry.
The historical overview starts from the earlier periods; however, its focus is on the period from the middle of the 19th century to the 1990s. The thematic sections range from various aspects of sea fishing (the presentation of fishing vessels, nets and fishing methods) to the fish trade and the fish processing industries.

The opening was the first in a series of events, marking the 70th anniversary of the museum. After the opening speeches of the director Franco Juri and the author of the exhibition, dr. Nadja Terčon, the latter guided the visitors through the exhibition.
The renewed look of the permanent exhibition was made possible by: conservator-restorer Ajda Purger, the museum’s technical team: Leonora Kortnik and Marko Goljuf, the designer Mateja Tomažinčič while Jani Mattica took care of the lighting.
The opening was attended by a large number of guests, including many from Piran.
