A rich accompanying program at the exhibition Sails of Our Sea: creativity and maritime heritage

As part of the exhibition The Sails of Our Sea, a rich and diverse accompanying program took place.

Pupils and students explored the tradition of decorating and painting sails, the variety of symbols used, and the techniques for coloring sails made from sailcloth.
Each participant then designed and painted their own sail using different symbols and colors.

The workshops were attended by pupils from Ciril Kosmač Primary School in Piran and its branch in Portorož, pupils from the Vicenzo and Diego de Castro Primary School in Piran, students from the Centre for Communication, Hearing and Speech Portorož, and students from the Gian Rinaldo Carli Grammar School in Koper.
Additionally, two workshops were held that were open to the public.

Participants from groups of watercolorists, painters, and ceramicists active within the Italian Community of Piran also found inspiration at the exhibition and created artworks.
Some of these works were displayed as part of the exhibition.

On June 10th, we also organized a gathering of the Voga Veneta Piran group, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. Two sails displayed at The Sails of Our Sea exhibition belong to a topo boat, the vessel they have been rowing on since the very beginning.

During the event, we screened the film La nostra barca (Our Boat), created by Gabriela Dolinšek for the group’s 5th anniversary.
We were also joined by two maritime and fishing heritage experts from Venice, Luigi Divari and Ugo Pizzarello, who presented various types of traditional vessels, the beginnings of fishing, and the tradition of sail painting.

The program continued with a lecture titled Glimpses of Sailing Tradition, Model Making... and Some Rowing by Vinko Oblak, an expert in local maritime heritage. He showcased interesting documents and photographs on the origins of sport sailing, model making, and rowing.

The exhibition was on view in Monfort until July 6, 2025.
