3rd Partner Meeting of the Mala 3ARKA Project Against the Backdrop of the Former Monfort Salt Warehouse

On Thursday, 22 October 2026, the third meeting of the Mala 3ARKA project took place, with the former Monfort salt warehouse lending the event an additional maritime flavour thanks to its interactive centre and colourful exhibition of vessels.

The event was hosted by the Municipality of Piran, and the meeting was also attended by Croatian and Slovenian partners: the lead partner, Primorje-Gorski Kotar County; the Kvarner Tourist Board; Kraljevica Castle; the Kuća o batani Ecomuseum in Rovinj; the Municipality of Izola; and the Tourist
Translated with DeepL.com (free version) The event was hosted by the Municipality of Piran and brought together Slovenian and Croatian partners: the lead partner, Primorje-Gorski Kotar County; the Kvarner Tourist Board; the City of Kraljevica; the House of the Batana Ecomuseum in Rovinj; the Municipality of Izola; and the Izola Tourist Board.

At the heart of the project, implemented under the Interreg Slovenia–Croatia programme, are cross-border cooperation, stronger connections between partners, and the creation of a tourism product that will also attract visitors outside the peak season. Its main outcome will be a platform featuring a range of customisable itineraries, allowing tourists and local residents alike to discover lesser-known routes. Along these routes, a new range of tourism experiences will be developed with funding from the project. These include the ARGO interpretation and development centre in the former fish cannery in Izola; the digital enhancement of content at Izolana – House of the Sea; a new interpretation centre at Stari škver in Rovinj; and digital upgrades to the maritime heritage interpretation centres in Kraljevica and Mošćenička Draga.

The Maritime Museum of Piran expects the partnership to deliver several tangible investments. Among other initiatives, an additional interpretation space dedicated to traditional boats will be established in the former Monfort salt warehouse in Portorož, in cooperation with the Municipality of Piran, which owns the premises.

Another feature likely to attract considerable public interest is the installation of photovoltaic roof tiles. Inspired by the example of the House of the Vettii in Pompeii, these will be installed on one of the salt workers’ houses in the Sečovlje Salina Nature Park. The electricity generated will make it possible to open an interpretation centre in a building protected for both its cultural and natural heritage, enabling it to operate throughout the year. The project will also enable the museum to purchase various items of equipment and produce a replica of an Istrian batela.
