The Piran Lighthouse - 500 lighthouses interconnected via radio waves

From 16 and 19 August 2024, the Maritime Museum "Sergej Mašera" Piran was glad and proud to host in its new dislocated unit, on the premises of the former lighthouse keeper's residence, where an exhibition about the Piran lighthouse is currently on display, radio amateurs who interconnect with the world.

These dedicated people, participants of the 24th ILLW session (International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend), associated once more from the Piran lighthouse via radio stations with other radio amateurs at 499 lighthouses on all seas and continents. Each participating lighthouse has been assigned an identification mark, with the Piran lighthouse carrying the designation SI-0001. The event, which has traditionally been held in the third week of August for 24 years, is internationally highly recognized and is tribute to all lighthouse keepers, mariners, and others who used and often still use radio waves for communication in the digitalized world. This kind of associating also signifies the preservation of an exceptional technical and intangible heritage which even these days, particularly in the event of disasters, demonstrates to be an effective alternative to the frequently-failed digital connections. Even during their stay and activities, it was possible to visit the lighthouse and the regularly scheduled exhibition and learn much about the international ILLW project.

Radio amateurs were also paid a visit at the lighthouse on Sunday by a few members of the VVP (Voga Veneta Piran), which operates within the framework of the Italian Community of Piran. The museum councilor Duška Žitko acquainted the guests with the exhibition'contest, while radio amateurs demonstrated the functioning of a radio station and successfully got in touch with a remote radio receiver at a lighthouse in Brazil!
