Animal Motifs and Materials in Collections of East Asian Origin in Slovenia

On 3 October 2023, the workshop Animal Motifs and Materials in Collections of East Asian Origin in Slovenia took place at the Maritime Museum Piran during its periodical exhibition Fragments of the Far East in the mariners' collections. It was led by Dr Klara Hrvatin from the Department of Asian Studies at the Faculty of Arts in Ljubljana.

The participants of the workshop, including pupils from the Epicentre in Lucia with volunteers from Spain and Belgium, learned about Chinese pigeon flutes and cricket cages, and through them learned about the special features of musical culture in China. They also learned about the symbolism of a few animals that were depicted on various objects in East Asia and can also be found on the exhibited objects. After the exhibition, its author Bogdana Marinac made a tour with the pupils through the museum.

The workshop was implemented within the framework of the project European Researchers’ Night – The Humanities, that is you and the project East Asian collections in Slovenia - orphaned objects, in which the Maritime Museum cooperates with the Department of Asian Studies of the Faculty of Arts in Ljubljana, Science Research Centre Koper and the Provincial Museum Celje.
