International symposium Orphaned Objects
On Monday, 18 September 2023, the international symposium titled Orphaned Objects – Theoretical and Methodological Approaches to the Research of East Asian Objects took place at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana.
It was organized by the Koper Science Research Centre in cooperation with the Department of Asian Studies of the Faculty of Arts in Ljubljana, the Maritime Museum Piran and the Regional Museum of Celje within the framework of the East Asian Collections 2: Orphaned Objects project.
Researchers engaged in the field of East Asian objects from many European countries, East Asia and the USA participated at the symposium. The research carried out into artefacts housed by the Maritime Museum Piran was also presented.
In her contribution, Dr Chikako Shigemori Bučar spoke about photo albums from East Asia, which are also kept by the Maritime Museum. The mariners’ items were further referred to by Dr Nataša Vampelj Suhadolnik in her paper titled Problems and challenges in provenance research, while Bogdana Marinac spoke about them in her report titled Are East Asian objects from the mariners’ collections orphaned?
