Filipas Davide

Davide Filipas (Cres, 29 December 1931 – Piran, 29 June 2018)

Davide Filipas was a representative of the very last generation of traditional shipbuilders in the Northern Adriatic. He devoted his life to the ancient profession, towards which he developed a very special attitude. He embodied everything that we can ascribe to the tradition and expect from it: wisdom, modesty and exceptional dedication to this particular profession.
After completing his three-year apprenticeship, on which he embarked in 1947 in the "Shipyard for the construction and repair of wooden vessels" owned by Antonio Chiola on the Island of Cres, he was obliged to take in 1951 due to the changed social conditions an additional course for shipbuilders at the vocational school "Centralna škola Sisak za učeníke u privredi". After successfully completing the course, he passed the master's exam on his home Island of Cres in 1951, thus formally acquiring the title of a master of the shipbuilding trade. In 1955, his life path led him to the Piran Shipyard, where he worked for several decades. A few years prior to his retirement, he was always ready to pass his knowledge to his younger colleagues at Marina Portorož. He was one of the very few masters of this profession in this part of Istria, who demonstrated his knowledge both through work and certificates of completed training.
