The very interesting map of the city of Piran

Finally, as a purely local curiosity and a source for studying the development of the city of Piran, it is worth mentioning the "Plan of the city of Piran" printed in 1889 (inv. No. 145 / P 6145). It is a large map (159 x 123 cm) but unfortunately printed on poor quality paper, therefore it was severely damaged due to frequent use. In the years 1992-1993, under the direction of Jedert Vodopivec, it was restored in the Archives of the Republic of Slovenia. After the restoration, experts advised immediate framing to prevent further damage, which was also done under their supervision. The map is framed and protected by glass.

In terms of size it is the largest map in the Museum but for the territory it includes it is the smallest. In the form of a map it shows the districts and streets of the city with the addition of a legend of the main points of Piran at the time.

The map is also interesting because it shows us the dimensions of the port of Piran at the time of its greatest expansion: with the internal mandrake before its replenishment in 1894 and when the external basin was already formed, just before the works began for the construction of the new pier in 1893.
