The present catalogue with the selection of marine painters and their works in the Maritime Museum “Sergej Mašera” Piran is a kind of an introduction to the review of marine painting in Slovenia, where it has not been dealt with separately as yet, as the paintings of this kind have been so far encountered only within the framework of landscape painting.

The collection of the works by various marine painters in the Maritime museum Piran originated during the first two decades after the Museum was established in Piran (the 60’s and 70’s) with a systematic collection of marines in our Littoral region as well as elsewhere in Slovenia and in cross-border countries. In such manner collected and for the first time dealt with paintings in fact represent the most significant achievements of this genre of the period discussed (the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the twentieth century) that have managed to survive in this part of the world. They are most interesting not only due to their artistic value but also for their documentary significance, which is the reason why they have been part of the permanent collection about history as well as cultural history of seamanship and fishing from the very time the museum was established. With a few exceptions, however, they have not been published or included in a thematic, monographic or topographical research.

In the introductory part the authoress Duška Žitko calls the attention to some basic artistic-historical work and collections, in which works by marine painters from the end of the 17th century to the golden age of English marines in the first half of the 19th century and to their mass appearance in the second half of the 19th century. A special attention in dedicated to the artistic atmosphere in Trieste at the end of the 19th century and in the beginning of the 20th century, when the first Trieste born marine painters appeared in the city.
The authoress divides the marine painting into portraits of ships, paintings of naval battles and portrait of seamen. Under these titles she then discusses the paintings exhibited in the Maritime museum Piran and refers to those kept in the Regional Museum Koper.
