Predloka in the vestibule of the worlds
Archaeological research by the Maritime Museum »Sergej Mašera« Piran in the period from 1972 to 1983
Elica Boltin Tome
The book by Elica Boltin Tome, archaeologist and former director of the Maritime Museum Piran, is an extensive and comprehensive work on the salient archaeological site of Predloka, where trenching and systematic archaeological excavations were carried out for no less than 12 years. The book, which was in the making for decades, includes the authoress's study, research, field, analytical, written and pictorial materials, and the published results of her substantial professional oeuvre.
The Maritime Museum is publishing the book as part of the celebrations of the 70th anniversary of the functioning of the Museum in Piran, where Elica Boltin Tome left a profound mark in her 35 years of agile archaeological and managerial work.
On the subject of Prepositions Elica Boltin Tome published several extensive articles, which are scattered in various scientific and professional journals. In the book, therefore, in a slightly modified version, with the permission of the editors of the Kronika and Acta Histriae, her two articles, to which her unpublished contribution is added. This, with its hitherto unknown content to the public, offers researchers the possibility of new knowledge, especially of the early Middle Ages in this area.
The hamlet of Predloka is situated in northern Istria. Invariably, it has been of transitional and strategic importance, which in antiquity and the early Middle Ages protected the entrance to the interior of Istria and partly to the interior of the Apennine Peninsula, into the tempting world of ancient wealth. This assumption is corroborated by habitational remains at Predloka as well as by next to the Church of St. John the Baptist discovered and researched skeletal burial site with documented graves from different periods from antiquity to the modern period.
The discovery of Old Slavic graves from the 9th-12th centuries is one of the paramount archaeological finds at Predloka and in Slovenian Istria as a whole, for these are the first oldest Slavic graves in this part of Istria! Furthermore, they are the first and still the only proof that the Slavs settled in the northern Slovenian part of Istria as early as the 8th century at the beginning of the Frankish rule in Istria and continued to settle there after the Rižana Placitum around the year 804.
The book is not only archaeological, but also historical, ethnological and loca. It is a mirror of that time, place and landscape, as well as the circumstances of the research! The selection of photos and attachments was the domain of editors Snježana Karinja and dr. Nadje Terčon. Mateja Tomažinčič added a modern touch with her original design.
The book is written in slovenian language. Summary are in italian and english language
