Film Evening with Paolo Venier

Archive Films and Footage on Fishing and Piran

Paolo Venier, born in Trieste and of Piranese descent, is a collector of vintage films and historical musical materials. His research focuses primarily on items related to Trieste and Istria. His extensive archive preserves numerous films on celluloid—often unique copies—documenting the period from the early 20th century to the 1940s. Materials dating from the 1950s onwards are preserved on video formats. As a musician himself, he is equally dedicated to collecting sound recordings and sheet music from both sacred and secular repertoires.

On the occasion of the exhibition " Mullet in the nets - traditional mullet fishing and watercolours of Adriatic fish ", two remarkable films from 1966, created by the Piran-born filmmaker Graziella Corsi Petracco, will be presented. They depict traditional grey mullet fishing and winter fishing practices. The programme will also feature rare archival footage of Piran and its surroundings, filmed in 1937 by an amateur filmmaker from Trieste.

The event will also offer a unique opportunity to hear the Anthem of the Piran Fishermen's Association, composed in 1926, on a rare recording from 1989.
