Exhibition SLOVENIAN SHIPS: Six Ships of Splošna plovba at the Maritime Museum of Crete
At the invitation of the Maritime Museum of Crete in Chania, the Sergej Mašera Maritime Museum Piran is presenting the exhibition SLOVENIAN SHIPS: Six Ships of Splošna plovba. In the exhibition space of Neorio Moro – the permanent exhibition of historical and traditional shipbuilding housed in a monumental Venetian shipyard – six illuminated panels will be displayed, together with a showcase featuring the philatelic series SLOVENIAN SHIPS and publications and brochures issued between 2014 and the present.
A variety of content will be presented on screens, including animations, historical and documentary films, and materials that could not be transported to Crete.
It is worth recalling that in 2019 the Sergej Mašera Maritime Museum Piran, in cooperation with Pošta Slovenije, Splošna plovba, seafarers, philatelists and numerous institutions, prepared the exhibition SLOVENIAN SHIPS: Six Ships of Splošna plovba to mark the completion of the philatelic series SLOVENIAN SHIPS. The exhibition presented the six ships depicted on the stamps.
Following its opening in Piran, the exhibition travelled to Kočevje, Kamnik and Maribor. It was accompanied by a catalogue written by Duška Žitko, Museum Councillor and author of the exhibition.
The exhibition subsequently travelled to the Historical and Maritime Museum of Istria in Pula, where it was expanded with the presentation of eleven additional ships built at the Uljanik Shipyard in Pula and commissioned by Splošna plovba. The exhibition, entitled SLOVENIAN SHIPS: Six & Eleven Ships of Splošna plovba, was accompanied by a new catalogue of the same title.
The exhibition was warmly received in Split, Kotor and Rijeka, and at each venue it was accompanied by brochures in four languages. In spring 2025, it returned to Piran and, later that year, was also presented in Trbovlje.
Through its distinctive exhibition design and its exceptionally rich and significant maritime, cultural, historical and artistic material, the exhibition promotes awareness of Slovenia’s maritime heritage, with Splošna plovba occupying a central place within it. Reflection on the fate of what was once Slovenia’s leading maritime company provides an important and critical contribution to preserving historical memory and recognising the value of this heritage.
