Invitation to the lecture "The Secrets of the Dressed and Naked Aphrodite"

You are kindly invited to a lecture titled "The Secrets of the Dressed and Naked Aphrodite", to be given by our renowned archaeologist and museologist DDr Verena Perko on Monday, 2 June at 11:00 hrs, at the Maritime Museum Piran,

Cankarjevo nabrežje 3.

Aphrodite was the ancient Greek goddess of love; her Roman counterpart was Venus. Both have inspired artists of all periods of time to depict them as desirable, dressed or naked female figures. When having a look at artistic depictions in ancient times we seldom think that clothes and nudity had a certain mythical and social meaning, founded on the social status of women and particularly on the hierarchical attitude of men towards women. During the lecture, the political role of the goddess of love gained by her during the Roman Empire will also be presented.

The lecture is part of the accompanying programme of the Slovenian museums’ joint exhibition project "Heritage and the Power of Myths".

Do come, you will not regret it!
