Štumberger Miroslav
Miroslav Štumberger (Šmarje pri Jelšah, 2 July 1892– Igalo, May 1983)
Second Class Commodore, submariner and naval aviator, avid collector of maritime antiques and ship modeller. After graduating from the Secondary Modern School in Ljubljana in 1911, he joined the Austro-Hungarian Navy and in 1913 became a naval cadet. During his schooling he fought in the Balkan Wars in Albania. In 1914 he served, as Lieutenant, on board the ships Viribus Unitis and Monarch, then became a hydroplane pilot in the new naval base in Kumbor.
After completing a one-year torpedo course in 1915 Pula, he served in submarines U-17 as 3rd Mate and later on also in U-27 and U-28. In 1918 he attended a course for Submarine Captains.
After the war, he joined the Yugoslav Royal Navy, where he acquired the rank of Second Class Commodore in 1936. He served in the Underwater Weapons Command and played an important role in the establishment of the Underwater Weapons Centre. He was a member of the Commission controlling the construction of the first two Yugoslav submarines Nebojša and Hrabri in Newcastle and later on became the Nebojša’s Captain. Prior to retiring in 1938, he was the Commanding Officer of the South Adriatic Naval Authority. He received numerous awards for his merits. After retiring he lived at Baošići in Boka Kotorska, where his residence gradually changed into a true maritime museum owing to his immense collecting zeal.
